Call to Virtue, Good Character, and Spousal Rights in Islam

Encouraging noble deeds, excellent morals, beautiful companionship — and a clear statement of the rights Allah has given husband and wife over each other.

A Muslim marriage is not merely a social contract or a legal arrangement for the rearing of children. It is — at its highest expression — an act of worship, a partnership in the pursuit of the pleasure of Allah, and one of the greatest blessings He bestows upon His believing servants. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of his religion, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half." (Bayhaqi — classified as hasan)

The Foundation: Choosing for Deen

Before the rights and the character can flourish, the right person must be chosen. The Prophet ﷺ gave the most important guidance on this: "A woman is married for four reasons: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her deen. Choose the one with deen, and your hands will be enriched." (Bukhari and Muslim)

This applies equally to both men and women. A man of poor character and weak deen cannot fulfil his wife's rights, regardless of how much he earns. A woman of poor character and weak deen cannot fulfil her husband's rights, regardless of her beauty. The search for a spouse must begin and end with taqwa — that is the criterion that endures.

The Rights of the Wife

Allah says: "And women have rights similar to those over them in kindness." (Qur'an 2:228) The wife's rights upon her husband are many and serious:

  • Financial maintenance (nafaqah): Food, clothing, and shelter appropriate to his means. This is an obligation regardless of whether the wife is wealthy. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Their right upon you is that you provide for them and clothe them in a fitting manner." (Muslim)
  • Kind and just treatment: Allah commands: "Live with them in kindness." (Qur'an 4:19) This is not merely the absence of harm — it is the active presence of care, patience, and affection.
  • Her mahr: Given freely and on time, as agreed. It is her property absolutely — no one has any right to it.
  • Intimate rights: The husband must not neglect his wife's right to intimacy, or use it as a weapon of control.
  • Not to be harmed: Physical, emotional, and psychological harm are all forbidden. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not harm those whom your right hands possess." This applies equally to wives.

The Rights of the Husband

The husband's rights are also real and significant. Allah has given him the role of qawwam — protector, provider, and leader of the household — a responsibility that comes with both authority and accountability.

  • Obedience in what is permissible: The Prophet ﷺ said: "If I were to command anyone to prostrate to another, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate to her husband." (Tirmidhi) This indicates the great right of the husband — not a license for tyranny, but a call to the wife to honour his leadership in the household.
  • Not to admit into the home those he dislikes: The wife should not invite guests or people whom her husband disapproves of.
  • Not to fast voluntarily without his permission: This right relates to the obligations of cohabitation.
  • His intimate right: The wife should not refuse her husband without a valid reason, for this is among the matters the Prophet ﷺ warned about most sternly.

Beautiful Companionship: Husn al-Mu'ashara

Beyond the language of rights and obligations, the Prophet ﷺ modelled for us the highest standard of spousal conduct. He ﷺ said: "The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family." (Tirmidhi — sahih)

Beautiful companionship means:

  • Greeting your spouse with warmth when you arrive home.
  • Expressing love and gratitude openly — the Prophet ﷺ used to say to 'A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her): "Your love has been knotted in my heart."
  • Being patient with their faults, knowing that no person is without them.
  • Consulting each other in decisions, especially regarding the children and the home.
  • Remembering Allah together — reciting Qur'an, praying qiyam, making du'a for each other.

A Marriage That Pleases Allah

The greatest marriages in Islam were not those without difficulty — they were those in which the difficulty was met with patience, the ease was met with gratitude, and both husband and wife kept Allah at the centre. The Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) built their home on love, loyalty, and mutual support through the most difficult years of his mission. This is the model.

May Allah grant every Muslim a spouse who is a coolness of the eyes, a companion in worship, and a partner toward Paradise. Ameen.

"Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqina imama."

"Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader for the righteous." — Qur'an 25:74
